All About Bucktooth Rabbit
(Bucky)
By his Creator Sandra Mason
I guess Bucky and I have a lot of similarities; we both come from very large families and we both were teased and bullied. I have been overweight all my life; Bucky was different from all his brothers and sisters. I was teased about my weight all through school being called fatty, tubby and moose, just to name a few. Bucky growing up was called Bigfoot, spaghetti arms, floppy ears. These words don't sound too bad when you get older but when you are singled out as a child these words can be very hurtful. Most children who have been teased like this tend to bottle up their feelings and shut out the world around them.

Like Bucky, I spent a lot of my time alone growing up. Bucky loves to read and I spent most of my time in my room drawing. Even as adults, Bucky and I are still comfortable being alone and crowds make us very nervous. We are learning to open up and share our very private and personal lives with others through story books.

In the story "Bucktooth Rabbit — How Being Teased Hurts" Bucky and I hope to teach children at a young age how hurtful words can be. We hope they will learn that everyone comes in different shapes and sizes. It is not what people look like on the outside, it is what is on the inside that counts.

The second story "Bucktooth Rabbit — Small But Mighty" introduces a new little animal to the Great Forest, Suzy Skunk. Without giving away too much of the story let's just say that the permanent residents of the Great Forest are not happy with the big odor of things that comes in such a small package. Watch for this second book in the Bucktooth Series to be launched this summer!

The third story "Bucktooth Rabbit — Molly, You're Just Too Little" is in the planning stages. Two new characters will be introduced Molly Mole and Baxter Bear.

Each Bucktooth Rabbit book I write will be part of a fable series presenting pertinent children's issues. How a child is treated at a young age will affect how he or she feels about themselves as an adult. Being a victim of teasing myself, I would prefer to be behind the scene, never the center of attention. Although I have lost quite a bit of weight this past year, I am still very self conscious about my weight and appearance. I have a great support group in my life, a large family and a few close friends who are helping me to have confidence and to be proud of myself and everything that I have accomplished.

I hope the children today and for many generations to come will learn from my Bucktooth Rabbit stories that what makes us different makes us special and unique. All children should grow up feeling loved and happy to be who they are.

All About Me

The Author and Artist

My name is Sandra Mason; I am the artist and author of Bucktooth Rabbit Books. I was so excited when I received a phone call from Jean and she told me she was going to have a page of her website For Bucky! I, Bucky and all of his friends in the Great Forest appreciate the opportunity to talk about ourselves and our upcoming adventures.

I was born and raised 7 miles outside New Glasgow, Nova Scotia; the youngest of sixteen children (10 boys, six girls). I began drawing at a very young age, sketching mostly animals. At the age of sixteen I took oil painting lessons from a local artist named Danny Munro. In my thirties I decided to try watercolor painting and was instructed by another local artist, Lyn Sue Wise. I fell in love with watercolor and over the years I developed my own style of painting with this medium.

At the age of 42 I decide to enrol at the Nova Scotia Community College in Stellarton where I began my studies to obtain my Academic Grade 12 Diploma. Then eventually I moved to the NSCC Truro Campus where I continued my academic upgrading as well as enrolling in a core program called Digital Animation, graduating in 2006 with both diplomas.

Unable to find work handy to home, I was disappointed and unsure what I was going to do with my life. I was sitting in front of my drawing table just doodling a sad and lonely looking rabbit. I eventually named him Bucktooth Rabbit, Bucky for short. I decided to scan the doodle drawing into my computer and apply some color and that is how Bucky and the Great Forest were born!

I have known Sandra all her life and have been continually pleased and surprised as each of her many talents come into focus.

As her "Grade 5" teacher when she was 11 years old, I became aware of her skill in drawing. Her results were so well done and interesting that a number of them were gathered together under a single cover. This was her first book.

By the time she was sixteen, she had graduated from pen and pencil to oil painting. Her pictures are outstanding, particularly those of animals, both wild and domesticated, in their natural environment. Her work is widely known and appreciated.

In recent years she has added story writing to her abilities and has already written several books. These are mainly aimed for children stressing their relationship with each other.

It is a definite advantage that she cannot only write her stories but she can also do her own illustrations.

She is indeed a talented person.
